poway senior and community center
Designed to be the centerpiece of Poway Community Park, the single story 30,420 SF building integrates the senior services programs, the community recreational services programs and the existing aquatic center programs into a single building. Situated on a slightly elevated portion of the park the building is organized into three wings around a shaded south facing courtyard open to an existing grove of trees and the park and creek beyond. The existing aquatic center building and pool comprise one wing and the spaces for the multi-purpose/recreation uses and community/senior services the other two wings. A combination of exposed heavy timber construction, exterior plaster, fiber-cement board siding, stacked stone and standing seam metal roofing are used to give the building a contemporary interpretation of the rural farm and ranch buildings originally found in the local area. The heavy timber framing of the entry porch extends through the building as a unifying gallery space connecting all of the three building wings and providing an indoor-outdoor relationship with the courtyard.
